Phoebe Bridgers Is Raising Money for Daunte Wright's Family by Offering Handwritten Tattoo Templates
Published Apr 13, 2021As the trial of Derek Chauvin for the killing of George Floyd continues in Minneapolis, another Black man was tragically killed during a traffic stop with police in the city's Brooklyn Center suburb on Sunday (April 11). His name was Daunte Wright, and he leaves behind a grieving family, girlfriend and two-year-old son. Efforts to raise money for Wright's family are underway, and Phoebe Bridgers has stepped in to encourage her fans to donate in a clever way.
Last night, the singer shared a graphic on Twitter showing information about how to donate to the family, adding, "I've been seeing some people on here who want tattoos in my handwriting... If you donate here I'll write whatever you want."
Fans have responded to the offer in droves, requesting various phrases and lyrics from Bridgers' catalogue.
"Comment a screenshot of your donation (not the dollar amount I don't want anyone to be embarrassed about how much or how little they can give) and what you want me to write," Bridgers added.
While many fans have jumped at the opportunity, not everyone is pleased with the singer's methods. Some of Bridgers followers have criticized the offer as "performative and tone-deaf," accusing her and her fans of "transactional activism."
"Not this twee shit when a man is dead and others are being tear-gassed while protesting the state's ability to kill Black people with impunity," one user wrote.
