Published Nov 24, 2015Genre-hopping Quebecois hip-hop/electronic crew Dead Obies impressed with their 2013 LP Montréal $ud. Three years later, they'll release their sophomore album in early 2016.
The record is called Gesamtkunstwerk and sees the band moving into even broader sonic territory. A press release suggests the album will touch on artists like the Beastie Boys and Rage Against the Machine, as well as footwork and Quebecois folk music.
Further, the band explained that the purpose of the new album is to unite people through music:
We wanted to make an album where the sentiments show through the execution and production of the work rather than only through the lyrics. The themes (commitment, the balance of power between truth and falsehood, the notion of individuals connecting around spectacle, etc.) are explored through multiple mediums; from the recording (in concert and in studio) to the album's commodification, each step of the production is scrutinized so that everything points towards a cohesive discourse. We find ourselves with an album where the music is at the forefront and fulfills its principle purpose: to unite.
