Charlie Brooker Not Working on New 'Black Mirror' Episodes Because Society Has No "Stomach" for It
Published May 06, 2020Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker has hinted there won't be any new episodes of the series anytime soon because he doesn't feel like the timing would be appropriate.
Speaking with Radio Times, the showrunner suggested that perhaps now would not be the best time to write about dystopic futures — given the already sad state of the world and, of course, the trials of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
"I've been busy doing things. I don't know what I can say about what I'm doing and not doing," Brooker said. "At the moment, I don't know what stomach there would be for stories about societies falling apart, so I'm not working away on any on of those. I'm sort of keen to revisit my comic skill set, so I've been writing scripts aimed at making myself laugh."
This may explain why Brooker is instead back working on his Wipe series, which will be back this year for a new COVID-19 lockdown special.
Season 5 of Black Mirror aired last summer on Netflix. The three-episode return featured appearances by Miley Cyrus, Angourie Rice, Madison Davenport, Andrew Scott, Damson Idris, Topher Grace, Anthony Mackie, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Nicole Beharie, Pom Klementieff and Ludi Lin. Earlier in 2019, the series aired a one-off, choose-your-own-adventure episode titled Bandersnatch.
The show has been running since 2011.
