Published Apr 30, 2019Badge Époque Ensemble bring together an esteemed collective of Toronto musicians, and the band will release their debut self-titled album on June 7. Ahead of the LP's arrival, the group have offered up a new song called "Undressed in Solitude."
Badge Époque Ensemble feature ringleader Maximilian "Twig" Turnbull (f.k.a. Slim Twig) teaming up with Blood Ceremony's Alia O'Brien, U.S. Girls live players Giosue Rosati, Ed Squires and Chris Bezant, and Jay Anderson.
Their debut album boasts six songs, many of which are based around instrumental compositions by Turnbull, though the ensemble add flourishes of everything from jazz to hip-hop to tropicalia and prog.
The first track to be unveiled is the 11-minute "Undressed in Solitude," and contrary to its title, the song hears the Badge Époque Ensemble enlisting help from R&B singer James Baley on vocals.
"'Solitude' explores the notion of personhood as a daily application," Turnbull tells Exclaim! about the new song. "What remains if misplaced or misapplied? How are we altered in sleep? Where is the singer if he is silent for most of a song? If an identity is misplaced, the only respite may be a rhythm to follow."
It blends flute, congas, bass, drums, guitar and clavinet, whisking listeners away on a psychedelic odyssey.
