Published Jan 10, 2019Rising rapper Kevin Fret — widely known as the first openly gay Latin trap artist — has been shot and killed. According to various media reports, Fret was gunned down in Santurce, San Juan, Puerto Rico, while on his motorcycle. He was just 24.
According to a report by El Nuevo Dia (which has since been confirmed by Billboard), Fret was shot at approximately 5:30 a.m. local time this morning. He later died at Medical Center of Río Piedras.
In a statement, Fret's manager Eduardo Rodriguez wrote the following:
Kevin was an artistic soul, a big-hearted dreamer. His passion was music, and still had a lot to do. This violence must stop. There are no words that describe the feeling we have and the pain that causes us to know that a person with so many dreams has to go. We must all unite in these difficult times, and ask for much peace for our beloved Puerto Rico.
Fret first began his rise with the 2018 single "Soy Asi," as well as the track "Diferente" with Mike Duran, also from last year. During Fret's career, he frequently spoke of trying to open doors for other emerging artists in the LGBTQ community trying to break into the rap game.
As of press time, it appears no arrests have been made in connection to Fret's murder.
